The day of the dead!

Hello, I know we haven't posted in ages so we decided to do individual posts and I (julia) being a keen bean has been thinking about doing this post for ages.

My aunt makes these cute little decorated boxes called "nichos" with skeletons inside, they are used as decorations to celebrate the day of the dead in Mexico. This is a mexican holiday in which families gather and pray for those relations which have died, this takes place on November 1-2.
Traditionally people build shrines such as "nichos" for the deceased, they also build "private altars" honoring the deceased  visiting graves sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed as gifts. Anyways I have always thought thought they were pretty cool so I thought why not make an outfit inspired by that. So I have, and my camera is pretty bad so the pictures are not so fab but.. I tried.

Here's a picture of the nicho my aunt made for my mum's ,she also made me a sylvanian style nicho (because I found the skeleton ones creepy when I was little) and my sister had a buddha one because she went through a phase of being all buddhist and zen worshipping.

And heres a picture of an actual nichos from South America,
cute skulls!
Heres a personalised altar, seriously when I die I am expecting my family to be this dedicated.
So any way heres the outfit I made:

So I am pretty proud of that top because I made it, yeah I know I drew the skeleton quite simplistically but I think that made it more effective (I just dont have those kind of drawing skills) but it took ages I had to cut the shirt and stitch the heart on and had to debate with myself for like half an hour whether I had put it on the right side that the heart goes, but eventually I finished. I used a collection of jewellery from myself and my mum, she has this cool little necklace with every charm from all over the world. The skirt is from when my mom was little and it is so lovely with all these tassels but I keep having mini heart attacks that they might fall off. Lastly are my dorothy shoes, oh how I love them, they are the closest thing I am allowed to high heels (yet) I am so short that I am going to have like the biggest platform shoes when I am older. I almost forgot that I was kind of inspired for my top from this picture I found on tumblr :

I know mine looks not so good when you see these but you see where Im coming from?
Anyways I just like to say sorry for the pixelly photos but my camera makes me look like a frightened rabbit with flash.
Byee
Julia xxxx
Oh and I forgot to mention that the corpse bride really reminds me of nichos actually practically any Tim Burton film does ...
