The day of the dead!

Hello, I know we haven't posted in ages so we decided to do individual posts and I (julia) being a keen bean has been thinking about doing this post for ages.

My aunt makes these cute little decorated boxes called "nichos" with skeletons inside, they are used as decorations to celebrate the day of the dead in Mexico. This is a mexican holiday in which families gather and pray for those relations which have died, this takes place on November 1-2.
Traditionally people build shrines such as "nichos" for the deceased, they also build "private altars" honoring the deceased  visiting graves sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed as gifts. Anyways I have always thought thought they were pretty cool so I thought why not make an outfit inspired by that. So I have, and my camera is pretty bad so the pictures are not so fab but.. I tried.

Here's a picture of the nicho my aunt made for my mum's ,she also made me a sylvanian style nicho (because I found the skeleton ones creepy when I was little) and my sister had a buddha one because she went through a phase of being all buddhist and zen worshipping.

And heres a picture of an actual nichos from South America,
cute skulls!
Heres a personalised altar, seriously when I die I am expecting my family to be this dedicated.
So any way heres the outfit I made:

So I am pretty proud of that top because I made it, yeah I know I drew the skeleton quite simplistically but I think that made it more effective (I just dont have those kind of drawing skills) but it took ages I had to cut the shirt and stitch the heart on and had to debate with myself for like half an hour whether I had put it on the right side that the heart goes, but eventually I finished. I used a collection of jewellery from myself and my mum, she has this cool little necklace with every charm from all over the world. The skirt is from when my mom was little and it is so lovely with all these tassels but I keep having mini heart attacks that they might fall off. Lastly are my dorothy shoes, oh how I love them, they are the closest thing I am allowed to high heels (yet) I am so short that I am going to have like the biggest platform shoes when I am older. I almost forgot that I was kind of inspired for my top from this picture I found on tumblr :

I know mine looks not so good when you see these but you see where Im coming from?
Anyways I just like to say sorry for the pixelly photos but my camera makes me look like a frightened rabbit with flash.

Oh and I forgot to mention that the corpse bride really reminds me of nichos actually practically any Tim Burton film does ...

Let me tell your fortune..

First post
I thought of this theme of magical gypsies and magicians from the book I was reading called "something Wicked this way comes" its very creepy, set in this evil carnival, and I was so into it that I missed my tube stop whilst reading it. Well, I guess what we did wasn't exactly creepy but we I think the outfits were kind of theatrical..ish.

So, heres Sophia wearing this old dress I have had in my dressing up draw (a lot of my stuff comes from there!) and she is wearing a top from free people but the wrong way round (its a dress but the bottom was exactly what I wanted so I draped it over her neck) and I went a bit mad with scarfs and kind of tied them everywhere, Georgie had some perfect jewellery for the outfit.
Twiggy looking kind of gypsish with the headscarf and all,

I know kind of unrelated but just now I was thinking of gypsies and fortune tellers and I remembered "Big", that movie where Tom Hanks plays a child trapped in an adults body, and he wishes on that fortune teller machine, so yeah, I do have an explanation for my weirdness.

This was the book I was rambling on about before and I thought the cover looked pretty cool
So heres Georgie sporting another outfit:

Yeh you may have noticed the continual use of that fancy purple curtain, but come on it does look pretty magicalish, so it may come in handy. Me and Georgie (Georgie and I, yes I know i know) have used a skirt for a shawl (pretty creative huh?) and the rest of the outfit is various beachy bits and pieces.
I chose this from the vivenne westwood fashion show because though I know it doesn't directly link to our magical theme I think the ruffly shawl and the texture definitely links in and also I just really like this outfit.
And lastly me,
So I wore a more magician type outfit, this consisted of an enormous glittery black coat which I found in my dressing up draw (seriously me and my sister used to play so much with it and now it comes in surprisingly handy!) and a skirt which is a sacred hand-me down (i get tonnes of hand-me-downs since I am the smallest in my family, when I was little it was all like blah but as you get older it gets much better, but I do always feel kind of evil when my cousins and over their favourite clothes really unwillingly), a skirt which my sister bought when she was like 11 in camden and has been her most loved piece of clothing for 5 whole years and lastly my velvety purple top. My top is actually a dress but is super short and Im just praying for something to wear it out in before I have to hand it over to some far off relatives, I am slightly obsessed with it at the moment and I think I might just cry giving it away. Oh almost forgot the SUPER BIG gold lock necklace which Georgie has, but thats me all done!

Next week I think we might do 40s style but not quite sure x
